Nostalgia

Been feeling a bit daydreamy lately, when I have a spare moment to think. Work is unendingly stressful, and today I pretty much had a nervous breakdown at work. I feel like I can't handle everything sometimes.

Last weekend I visited my parents, which I don't do very much. My mom showed me a box of old toys I used to have when I was a kid. It was such an awesome thing to find toys I had obsessed over as a child, especially Gonga, the cute little monkey at the beginning of this blog. I spent so much time playing with this toy, and yet over the past 10 years I had completely forgotten about him. I found myself staring at him later on that night, remembering a much different time in my life.

This feeling resonated as I went shopping with my dear friends Mandy and Kristin. We were at Best Buy and wandered down an aisle that had every TV show and kid movie we watched when we were little. Mandy bought "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" and I bought "The Neverending Story" and "The Secret of NIMH." The second one my brother inspired when he showed me the two little pet mice he has, one of which has the name Mrs. Brisby.

Which reminds me. I have the coolest brother ever... he gave me an iPod which I have always wanted!! He has given me many little gadgets to play with, things I cannot afford to buy but always wished I had. I am not just writing this because I know he reads this blog. I have had my family on my mind a lot lately, ever since the thought of moving far away from almost everyone I know has started weighing on my mind. I miss them now, even though I am only hours away by car.

Sonoma Garden Tour

My best bud Christian was in town from LA, dropping off half of his stuff because he is moving here in two weeks! Yay! Since Christian is a Landscape Designer, whenever he is around I get to wander around gardens in the area. I always keep my little digi Canon ready. This weekend was the perfect time to be outdoors. We visited Sonoma Horticultural Nursery, California Carnivores, Pond & Garden Nursery, and Empire Nursery.

Sonoma Horticultural Nursery boasts of hundreds of rhododendron and azalea species. There is also a huge garden with a large pond lined with gunneras (also called dinosaur food due to their gnarly spiny stems and huge spans of leaves. The paths take you inward... I have been three times and I always get lost in there. There are rows and rows of clematis vines, abutilons, and irises everywhere.

Next stop, California Carnivores, where all the plants eat bugs. They had many species of pitcher plants, other strangely alien-like plants, and bromeliads. These plants had intricate spot patterns or dark crimson patches everywhere.

Pond & Garden is where my roommate Jarid works. They have lots of cool koi fish & turtles, as well as waterlilies, bromeliads, japanese maples, fountains & other various water features. This place is relaxing and beautiful!

Empire Nursery has a large koi pond with bridges and gazebos overlooking it, a Japanese Maple house, and several oversized buddhas.

Sonoma County truly is the perfect place to grow almost any kind of plant! I enjoyed myself immensely just seeing the many brilliant forms plants have evolved into, their sharp bright colors and amazingly unique design.

Bodega Bay Drive

My dear friend Mandy and I took a drive out to Bodega Bay today. It was beautiful out by the coast, with just enough of a breeze and sunny weather. Something about being by the ocean that makes me feel calm. Something about how vast and enormous it is, how it stretches on forever. When I lived in Mendocino County, I would take at least 15 minutes out of everyday (usually at sunset) to look at the ocean and remember how small I am. This was easy for me because my front yard was literally the ocean, and my backyard the forest.

Taking these car trips are what living here is all about. There is little to no nightlife scene in the area. There is nothing but nature, waiting for you to see it during the daylight hours.

If I take this new job in Philadelphia, I will trade that natural beauty for a thriving metropolitan city. I will regain a growing techno scene and leave behind pretty flowers and fresh air. I will give up 75 degree summer days and but gain culture, architecture, and history. Bust out the pros and cons list... is it really worth it?

Pensive

I have been up late tonight turning over the same idea in my head making myself crazy with mind mazes. I hate it when I'm like this. It doesn't even seem like I'm solving anything by worrying about my problems, but for some reason I sit here and thnk about it from every angle, the point of view from every person involved. I don't know exactly what I am trying to figure out when I do this. Even now, in order to stop thinking about something I've been thinking about all night, I am writing about how I overanalyze it. So, I am analyzing ANALYZING. Whew. Sometimes I hate being so introspective.

Epiphany Gig

Epiphany Gig

As a DJ and music aficionado, I am proud to be involved in this event, representing several different eclectic forms of music. Epiphany Music in Santa Rosa is dedicated to bringing all forms of music to the public, and hosts different events such as drum circles, bands, and DJ shows. My good friend Alan Parker, who is also a drummer in the band "Peace Warrior" has put together this benefit to showcase some local talent. I am excited that he asked me to be a part of this event, which will bring local talent to the North Bay.

Join us next Friday, June 24, 2005 at Epiphany Music at 640 4th Street in downtown Santa Rosa. Only a $5 cover benefits Epiphany so they can keep bringing the music to the people! It is on 4th street between Mendocino Ave and D Street and it kicks off with the DJs doin their thing at 8 pm. We will also play a small interlude beginning at 10 pm while the second band sets up.

This is a good cause and a great location, and if we have a good turnout they will continue to throw more events, in hopes to improve the North Bay's nightlife. (Of which it needs LOTS OF HELP.) By the way... I designed the flyer too... :)

Adventure in Lower East Side

My first time in Times Square
Originally uploaded by DJ Dylema.
What may have seemed like a boring night to the New York residents who accompanied us that night was rather exciting for someone who is used to quiet, uneventful Northern California.

A late night rendevous with Mike's friends began at about midnight in Lower East Side Manhattan. Our journey started at the Bowery Street Poetry Club. The first band was a loud, angry lesbian band singing about how straight people didn't accept them, but how they shouldn't care. Next, a Mad-TV style comedy routine by two girls wearing tight, short shorts and halter tops. Then, two guys jumping up and down while playing neo-wave electro and singing about Ibiza. We left at about the time the singer guy stripped down to his g-string and started waving his ass at the audience.

This was the part that energized me the most, even though it was to others probably the most uneventful part of the night. (Not the guy waving his ass, but walking through the streets of New York!). One of Mike's friends said it was the worst possible night to go out in lower east side, because everyone was out. It was not that there was nothing to do, it was that every place was packed to the gills. The reason why this is my favorite part: catching the tiny snippets as you pass by the hoards of people walking down the street... bouncing from bar to bar. Hanging out with Jay, Mike's buddy, who seemed to know someone in every place we went and knew every place that was cool to go. He led us through the busy streets from crowded bar to crowded bar. We finally ended up at Max Fisch's, where we had to squeeze past the bar area madness to find some chairs by the pool table in the back.

"I am an uptight New Yorker," Jay was saying. "I am always on the go, if one place bores me there's probably something exciting happening a few blocks from here."

Later we decided to go to Jay's apartment rooftop to chill. The view overlooked the Empire State Building and surrounding areas. The lights of the city and the whirlwind of taxis flying by somehow seemed to calm me. Feeling so small, yet part of something so big. There was something that felt so tangible about the experience I was having, something alive, the times you wanted in to dwell in, the times when you weren't wishing you were somewhere else.

The cabbie literally flew back to Times Square. Our fare was only $6 as compared to the $10 we had paid to get out there. We grabbed a 4:30 am slice of pizza at the place across from the hotel. It was some of the best pizza I had ever had. I didn't pass out until near 5:30 am, with the sounds of the City still blaring outside the window. I could never live there, I would never sleep. The City calls you out to it, breathing with its own life. As we walked along, I heard a girl say to her friend, "Where are we going? What are we doing? Why are we still here?" To which her friend replied, "I'm going home! The sun's almost up! I'm going to sleep!" It was too reminiscent of the comment Jay had made earlier. I chuckled to myself as we headed back to the Paramount.

In the morning we strolled down to the Intrepid Museum of Sea, Air, and Space. It is a huge aircraft carrier with planes, tanks, helicopters, and other vehicles on display. The clouds were excellent that day and the photographer in me emerged. Meanwhile, Mike was like a kid in a candy store, racing from plane to plane, identifying them, talking about how cool they were. And he had a blast spinning me around for a few minutes straight in the G-Force flight simulator. (Not my favorite part.)

There was so much more I didn't get to see, but it was time to go back to Philadelphia...

First Impressions of New York City

Well, I am sitting in my hotel room in NYC after a really long day of exploring with my dear Mike Panik. I find this city absolutely amazing! It goes on and on, and people are just everywhere! I am staying at the Paramount Hotel which is just about two blocks from Times Square. We had lunch at a fabulous Italian restaurant. We visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art and we were both completely overwhelmed by the collection. Then we took a walk through Central Park and saw the sun set over the Jackie O Reservoir. I took a lot of pictures, but you couldn't capture that feeling through the lens. The reflections of the sunset with the cityscape in the background filled me with a sense of awe. We took a cab to Times Square just as the sun set. Times Square has a way of making you feel very small but very alive at the same time. I thrive on the hustle and bustle of the urban setting, and I was elated by the all the lights and activity!

I am falling in love with the East Coast. Every time I feel more like this may be the place for me. I arrived in Philly Thursday night, and Friday morning we took a ferry across the Delaware River to the newly opened Adventure Aquarium in Camden, New Jersey. I saw hippos and penguins and sharks and jellyfish and all kinds of fish. We made a stop at my favorite record store, 611 Records, where I bought tons of fresh new vinyl. Later that evening, we went to Carl Michael's birthday party at Pure, which is usually a gay club. There was an open bar, which proved to be dangerous, as Mike was telling the bartender to spike up my drinks to potent status. We hung out with Nigel Richards and crew. Needless to say, I spent the evening getting sick in Mike's bathroom. When I woke up this morning I had a hangover worse that anything since I was a freshman in college!

So much to do, so little time... I think we are getting ready to head out again and explore more of this "city that never sleeps." More later, when my brain has time to process all that I have seen so far...

Packing for another adventure

I've been pretty busy the last few weeks. My best buddy Christian who I met in (my first try at) college, came up to Nor Cali to visit me this weekend! Me and a few of the Hardcore Trout piled into a car this weekend and drove all over the Bay Area, visited two beaches, hiked around, drove through beautiful country roads in perfect sunny weather, and ate in fabulous restaurants, including the Sabieng Thai restaurant in Santa Cruz and Fresca Peruvian cuisine in San Francisco. Three of us were armed with digital cameras, so we took loads of pictures... check out MORE here. There are also pics from HT's last gig at the Lees!

More later... when I have a moment to spare! This weekend: another East Coast trip... Philly, NYC, Jersey! When I get a chance to catch my breath I will try to squeeze in a more intelligible entry. Life is more fun when you're moving this fast!
